How PurpleDocs is enabling people to access healthcare records anytime anywhere!

In conversation with the techie Ms. Pooja Gupta, Co-founder of PurpleDocs

PurpleDocs is an innovative cloud based offering for digitization of Indoor Patient Records and Diagnostics and making them accessible and analyzable online. One can enjoy the freedom to access healthcare records from anywhere and keep them safe and secure. The records are encrypted on cloud and one can extract vital information in just a single click.

Q1. How did Purple Docs begin its journey?

Ans. After working in the US for many years as software engineers, Deepak and I shifted back to India. Deepak`s mother was undergoing a surgery and it was a big task for us to gather all medical records. There were umpteen details needed to be handy and it was a cumbersome process. We decided to develop an app to maintain all medical documents at one place for the hospital as well. We have our own hospital, that became the trail ground for us and we launched our pilot program in 2010, when Internet was not a luxury. There was a country-wide problem of maintaining physical records, since a hospital needs to maintain medical history of a patient for about 3 years or in some cases life-time. We wished to create a simple solution to affect the community at large.

Q2. How is PurpleDocs solving a real life problem?

Ans. PurpleDocs has various programs in place. PurpleDocs offers an array of solutions that enables Clinics and Hospitals to access the patient’s longitudinal treatment history generated either in OPD or IPD on a click. Our solutions are customizable to match the exact needs of our clients and make it easy for clinics to digitize their old records and generate digital records going forward. Our flagship offering PurpleDocs is a digitization and archival offering, where we digitize paper based records, XRays, CT-scans, MRIs and make them all accessible over a click. The original records are archived in our warehouses and digital data is encrypted and stored in cloud. 

For clinics we offer Digital prescriptions generation App “PurpleDocs for Doctors” using which Doctors can either scribble their prescriptions on a Android Tab or digitally enter the treatment  data and access past prescriptions. Understanding the time constraints that the Doctors have in the clinic, we have made it an absolutely customizable interface where a Doctor only sees the fields he uses. This solution is proven to help save up to 45 minutes / day for the Doctor in OPD. 

We also have a post discharge care management module using which Doctors can remotely monitor the patients and provide extended care beyond boundaries with minimal supervision. 

For the patients, we have an App, PurpleDocs for patients which not only helps them upload their medical records but also reminds them for their medicine intake, booking appointments etc

Q3. What is the vision of the company?

Ans.  We want PurpleDocs to be the pocket heath app for all. It is not just to maintain your records but also for post discharge management to improve the health of the people. We have tie-ups with approx. 150 hospitals across India and have over 60 lakh medical records in our system. We only want to grow from here. What makes us unique is that our prescriptions are coupled with care management and patient symptoms.

Q4. What makes startup life exciting?

Ans. Both Deepak and I were techies in the US and loved our jobs. After a while, we started to introspect and find the purpose of our jobs. We wanted to create something more meaningful. The ability to take decisions for yourself and your business is what keeps us going. When we see the end user being able to use our app in front of us is what makes us the happiest. We have new features being launched every fortnight. We have a very flexible and lean team,  where the tech guys also are responsible for deployment. This gives them the opportunity to see the customer response first hand and understand his needs better. Every person gets the feeling of accomplishment by being an entrepreneur and the productivity is high. This is what makes it most exciting and we derive tremendous satisfaction out of it.

Q5. Any tips for our budding entrepreneurs?

Ans. One should never worry about funding. Never start a business to get famous, but rather solve a real life issue. Things never go as planned. Stick to your goal, you will survive if you are passionate enough.
