Posters of former minister and MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu ‘missing’ were seen in his own assembly constituency amid the ongoing ‘discord’ in the Punjab Congress unit. The poster promises Rs 50,000 on Sidhu’s ‘address’. Navjot Singh Sidhu is the MLA from Amritsar East assembly seat. Those who put up the poster allege that Sidhu is not visible in his area.
According to an India Today report, this poster has been pasted by an NGO, alleging that after winning the election, Navjot Singh Sidhu has forgotten the development promises made to the people. The NGO has claimed that he has not been seen in his assembly for a long time.
Assembly elections are due in Punjab next year.
This is not the first time that a poster of Sidhu’s disappearance has been seen in his assembly. Two years ago, in July 2019, a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader had put up posters of his ‘missing’ all over Amritsar and it was written that whoever finds the MLA will get Rs 2,100 and a travel reward to Pakistan. will be received as At the same time, in 2009, Congress workers had put up a poster of Sidhu being ‘missing’, when he was a BJP MP.
Sidhu met the committee formed by the party leadership
On Tuesday, Sidhu appeared in front of a 3-member committee set up to resolve the ongoing discord in the Punjab unit. After the meeting, he said that truth can be suppressed, but cannot be defeated. He said, “I came here on the call of the party high command and told him about the situation of the party. I kept the voice of the people of Punjab here. My stand will remain the same and there will be no change in it. They should get the democratic rights of the people of Punjab.”
Mallikarjun Kharge is the head of this committee. Apart from this, Congress General Secretary and Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat and senior Delhi Pradesh Congress leader JP Agarwal are included in this committee. For some time now, Navjot Sidhu has been continuously targeting Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. The two leaders also met twice in the last few months, but it did not yield any result.
The government is constantly besieging the Kotkapura firing case
Sidhu has been cornering the government after the Punjab and Haryana High Court rejected the investigation report into the police firing at people protesting against the desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib at Kotkapura in Faridkot in 2015. The court had directed the state government to constitute a fresh SIT (Special Investigation Team) to probe the matter. In April, Sidhu had demanded that the SIT investigation report of the case be made public.
Sidhu resigned from the cabinet in 2019
In May 2019, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had accused Sidhu of “not handling the local government department properly”, claiming that this led to the “poor performance” of the Congress in urban areas in the Lok Sabha elections. Tension had arisen in the relations between the two leaders after this allegation. During the cabinet reshuffle, important portfolios were taken from Sidhu, after which he resigned from the cabinet and he was away from all the activities of the Congress.
Navjot Singh Sidhu also met Congress President Sonia Gandhi in February. After this, there was discussion about Sidhu’s active role in the party. The party wants to end the bitterness between the two leaders before the elections for the Punjab Assembly elections. Some time back Amarinder Singh had challenged Sidhu to contest the next election from Patiala against him.
