The Sangam city, which houses the Naini central jail, will soon get a new Prayagraj District Jail with a capacity to lodge 2,600 inmates.

The new facility, which is being built next to the Naini Central Jail, will assist jail officials in reducing overcrowding.

The shocking fact is that the Naini Central Jail has a capacity of roughly 2,060 convicts, but it now houses almost 4,500.

The jail will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, a wide-ranging CCTV network spanning barracks, a video conferencing hall, an automated kitchen, and a modern hospital with 140 beds.

PN Pandey, senior superintendent of Naini Central Jail, informed TOI that Rs 176 crore was spent on the new district jail in Prayagraj, which will be operational by the end of June.

“After Varanasi, Agra, Fatehgarh, and Bareilly, Prayagraj would be the fifth district in the state to have both district and central jail facilities,” he added.

“The new district jail facility has a capacity of 2,600 inmates and is completely covered by CCTV cameras. Furthermore, the new facility will significantly reduce overcrowding at Naini Central Jail. In addition, the new institution features video conferencing for high-risk detainees and those convicted of horrific crimes, as well as cutting-edge security systems with extensive camera surveillance,” Pandey explained.

“Once the new facility is operational, all the undertrials from the Naini Central Jail will be transferred/shifted here,” he stated.
