DU is country’s most successful university, but much more can be done: Union minister Hardeep Puri

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday said Delhi University is the most successful “Centre of Excellence” in the country, but a lot more can be done. Speaking at the release of a book to commemorate 100 years of the University, the Housing and Urban Affairs Minister recalled his time at DU’s Hindu College and said that a good institution is defined by its student body.

“Great institutions are made of great faculty members. A good institution is defined by its student body. Institutions are celebrating and we are the first in the chain of that celebration.” “The university is the most successful university in the country. It is the most successful center of excellence. But there is much more that can be done.”

Edited by Puri, ‘Delhi University: Celebrating 100 Glorious Years’ is a collection of personal narratives and reflections from some of the most distinguished alumni and faculty of the University – Amitabh Bachchan, Kiren Rijiju, Dinesh Singh, Meenakshi Gopinath, Shashi Tharoor, Vivek Debroy, Imtiaz Ali, Ryan Karanjawala, Sanjeev Sanyal, Arnab Goswami, Dhananjay Y Chandrachud, Lakshmi Puri, Namita Gokhale and Vijay Shekhar Sharma.

The event was also attended by other contributors of the book – former DU Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh, former Assistant Secretary General in the United Nations Lakshmi Puri, lawyer Ryan Karanjawala, writer Namita Gokhale and film director Imtiaz Ali.

During his address at the event, the Union Minister said that it is a matter of pride and honor for some of its most illustrious alumni to collectively reflect on its rich history, vibrant student life and impact on India’s public discourse.

This compilation was conceived to celebrate 100 years of our institution and its role in advancing world-class education. It has successfully captured a spectrum of approaches that cover five decades of study or pedagogy at the university,” he said.
