Why is January 24th designated as “International Education Day”?

Every year on January 24, people around the world commemorate International Education Day.

The festival, which this year is in its fifth year, has as its motto “to invest in people, prioritize education.”

At the UNESCO headquarters in New York, the occasion will be commemorated on January 25.

According to a press release from the UN, “International Day of Education 2023 will be a global platform to sustain political mobilization, advance national commitments and global initiatives, and increase public engagement in favor of education as the road to peace, sustainable development, and individual and collective well-being.”

This year, UNESCO is focusing on Afghan women and girls who have been denied access to education. It demands the immediate elimination of the restriction on their ability to obtain an education.

UNESCO estimates that 771 million individuals worldwide are illiterate and that 244 million children and teenagers are not enrolled in school.

Nigeria and 58 other UN member states co-authored a resolution on inclusive, equitable, and high-quality education for all, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 3, 2018.

This action showed the “unwavering political resolve to support transformative efforts for these goals.”
