A 25-year-old auto-rickshaw driver was arrested for allegedly molesting a schoolgirl in south Delhi’s Saket area, police said on Wednesday.
He said that accused Shahrukh usually used to drive in Ambedkar Nagar, Sangam Vihar and Chirag Delhi areas.
According to the police, the incident happened at around 1.43 pm on 30 September.
The girl took an auto from her school in Saket and reached the Central Market of Lajpat Nagar to meet her mother. During the journey, the auto driver misbehaved with her by making obscene comments. He even touched her inappropriately, he said.
She somehow managed to get out of the auto near Lajpat Nagar metro station. After this the auto driver fled, a senior police officer said.
A case has been registered under Indian Penal Code sections 354 (assault or criminal force on woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of woman) and relevant section.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chandan Choudhary said the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and an investigation were conducted at Saket police station.
During the investigation, footage of hundreds of CCTV cameras was collected and analyzed. He said the registration number of the alleged auto was also obtained and raids were conducted in Trilokpuri, but the accused was not found at the address.
However, on the evening of October 11, at around 5.30 pm, the team, acting on the relevant information, laid a trap near the Khanpur traffic signal. The alleged auto was seen coming towards Khanpur from Badarpur side. When signaled to stop, the auto driver tried to run away at high speed. However, he was intercepted and brought under control.
Police said the accused auto driver has been arrested and the auto used in the crime has been confiscated.
