Education Ministry: Chairman post lies vacant in seven IITs, 22 NITs

Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan provided details regarding the open positions in a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha.

According to the Ministry of Education, there are seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and 22 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) without a chairperson.

In IITs and NITs, the role of chairperson is an honorary one. The Board of Governors (BoGs) of the individual institutes are presided over by the chairpersons. According to the Act and Laws governing these institutions, the Directors of these institutes are the chief academic and executive officers.

Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan provided details regarding the open positions in a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha.

“With the proper approval of the institute visitor, the chairperson, BoGs of other IITs are given the responsibility of the chairperson, BoGs in seven IITs. Corresponding to this, at 22 NITs, the position of chairperson of the BoGs is vacant. In accordance with the law, the NIT’s director currently serves as the BoGs’ chairman until a new nominee is submitted “said he.

There are members from various fields open positions at 11 IITs in other BoG positions. The boards of thirty NITs are now without two nominees from the BoG council, and 14 NITs are still awaiting nominations from their respective State governments.

“According to the stipulations under the Act and Laws regulating these Institutions, the empty positions are to be filled (up) by the appropriate designated authorities. The process of filling open positions with qualified, accomplished individuals is ongoing. The Ministry is actively considering the nominations for open positions that fall under its purview “said Mr. Pradhan.
