These resolutions can be about anything, including health, relationships, career, personal growth, or hobbies. With so many grand resolutions floating around its important to put together a plan that works.

The history behind New Year

Approximately 4,000 years ago, Babylonians celebrated the beginning of their new year with an 11-day festival in March, and ancient Egyptians celebrated the beginning of their new calendar during the annual flood of the Nile River. By 46 B.C., Roman emperor Julius Caesar had changed the first day of the year to January 1 in honour of Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, an idea that took some time to catch on. However, Pope Gregory XIII restored the Jan. 1 New Year with the Gregorian calendar in 1582, a concept that is still in use today.

Making New Year’s resolutions is said to have originated with the Babylonians, who reportedly made promises to the gods to gain favour in the coming year. They frequently resolved to pay off their debts.

We often look at these resolutions as a checklist, not as something which will bring everlasting and positive changes in life. Be it Getting in shape or bettering one’s physical health, Eating a more nutritious diet, saving money or getting out of debt, getting rid of a bad habit, such as smoking or procrastination, taking up a new skill or hobby, volunteering or donating to the community, improving relationships or communication with family and friends or concentrating on personal development or self-care.
